FFXIV Leveling Synergies are Essential

2011-01-14

FFXIV players and FFXIV Power Leveling stuff may know that finding the right fit in a group can be extremely satisfying; both in terms of raw “fun” factor and in terms of return on your time invested.  For those who played Final Fantasy XI back in its early days, you’ll remember the outstanding synergies that existed between Samurais and other melee classes in terms of ripping off consecutive skillchains, and many will remember the “HOLY CRAP” the first time they saw a Black Mage rip off an Ancient Magic Burst off of a skillchain for huge damage.
FFXIV has those synergies as well.  In the early going, finding these synergies can help you on your way to extraordinary gains in experience points (andFFXIV Gil, for that matter). It’s a combination of good cooperation and good class synergy.  We usually duo it, but trios, foursomes, and even larger groups can experience the same effect.  Here are my recommendations for how to go about it.
First: at least one of you probably needs to have the ability to heal.  This does not necessarily mean that you need to be a Thaumaturge or a Conjurer.  You can pick up the Cure or Sacrifice abilities with minimal leveling of either class, and having Second Wind from Pugilist goes a long way as well.
Second: at least one of you needs to be built of something sturdier than paper.  This does not mean that you 100% need a gladiator, pugilist, or anything else.  In fact, a properly geared caster at level 20 takes about the same amount of damage as a properly geared melee player.  Even less damage will be taken if you followed my advice for casters and are leveling with a shield.  You have a lower HP pool to begin with, but you can take a hit or 3 or 4, usually enough time for heal to take effect. And upgrading your armor is very, very important.
Third: craft to repair your own weapon.  This is crucial.  So much time can be saved by not having to go back to town to repair your weapon.  And though I don’t have conclusive proof of this theory, we believe STRONGLY that the durability status of your weapon affects your experience gained! If you won’t craft to repair your weapon, then buy 3-5 copies of it so that you can equip a fresh one when one breaks down.
Fourth: Buffs.  Get them! Having the right buffs available to your duo or trio can make an enormous difference, and even open up a wider variety of viable hunting grounds for you.
Fifth: and most importantly, find the right hunting grounds.  If you’re tearing monsters to pieces within seconds, you’re not getting great experience points.  You want the fights to last longer than 20 seconds, but never longer than a minute.  That’s because each monster seems to have a built-in experience cap.  Once you’ve earned a certain threshold of points on a monster, any subsequent gains will be tiny compared to what you should be getting.
