How to Deal with Your Stat Points If You Are a Combat Class

2011-01-10

When players do the FFXIV Power Leveling or level up their own character, he may kill a few monsters or craft a few items, and voila! And then level should be increased and may been awarded stat points, level upgraded, that is great!  But what to do with the stat point?  There are six primary stats: Strength, Dexterity, Vitality, Intellect, Mind, and Piety. And there are ways about how you can do with them.
You can figure out pretty easily what each stat does.  Strength is responsible for the power of physical attacks, dexterity for their accuracy.  Vitality is responsible for your defense and for your HP.  Points in Intellect will increase your offensive magic potency, and Piety will increase the accuracy of your magical attacks.  Mind will increase the amount your spells heal for and the protection afforded by spells like Stoneskin as well as your magic defense, and will also increase your MP.
So now you might think that means Disciples of War want to pump their points into offensive categories like Strength (STR) and Dexterity (DEX) exclusively to maximize their output.  Good instincts but set them aside for a moment.  The way the stats are tuned right now, Strength and Dexterity seem to have only a small amount to do with the potency and accuracy of your attacks. The same is true of Intellect and Piety: offensive caster stats have seemingly little effect on the damage done by spells!
It is not saying you that you should ignore STR, DEX, INT, and PIE.  But there are reasons that they shouldn’t be the first points you spend.
For every class, having more HP is better. High HP means better survivability, allows you to fight for longer without stopping to go into Passive Mode or, heaven forbid. The bottom line is that spending your first points in Vitality will get you a better return on your stat investment than putting them into offensive stats.
For Casters, Mind is extremely good. Maybe you don’t care about your cure potency or magic defense.  Mind’s effect on cure potency is minimal. The reason you care so much about Mind is to buff your MP pool.  The reason this is so important: tranquility and exaltation scale with the size of your mana pool
That means if you take your mana pool from 300MP to 600MP, your respective mana-restoration spell will go from returning about 180-190 MP to returning nearly 300!
The bottom line is that you’ll be able to cast high damage spells much more frequently now that you can recover nearly twice the mana every 10 minutes, and the slight damage decrease that you’ll see from less INT and PIE will be overwhelmingly outweighed by the extra damage you’ll get from being able to cast another 12-15 high damage spells every ten minutes.
