Can You Play Honkai Star Rail on Mac (2026)

Almost 3 years have passed since the launch, and Hoyoverse has yet to provide us with a native macOS client. They put it on PS5, they optimized it for iPad, but if you own a MacBook, you are seemingly out of luck.

But you don't have to be.

Whether you are rocking an M3 Max or an older Intel machine, we have tested every single method available in 2026. From native iOS emulation to cloud streaming, here is exactly how you can play Honkai Star Rail on Mac without buying a PC.

The Don't Do This List: CrossOver & Whisky

Before we get to the solutions, let’s save you some time. If you are used to playing Cyberpunk 2077 or Elden Ring on Mac using CrossOver, Whisky, or Game Porting Toolkit 2—stop right there.

It does not work for Star Rail. In contrast with other Windows games, Honkai: Star Rail is played with a dedicated kernel-level anti-cheat (ACE), which identifies virtualization environments right after their presence. In trying to install the PC version by using CrossOver, a black screen or a code will show up. Waste no time trying to patch it: the community has been trying to do so over years, with no result.

In order to play Honkai Star Rail on Mac, you have to think otherwise. You are not imitating the PC version, but doing the mobile version.

Native: PlayCover (Method 1)

PlayCover

Method 2: The Native Feel (PlayCover)

This performance king has just been the Apple Silicon Mac (M1, M2, M3, or M4). PlayCover allows you to execute the iOS apps using your Mac with almost the same performance. Since Mac has the same architecture as iPad, you will run the game at buttery smooth 120FPS.

How To Set It Up:

  1. Download PlayCover: Grab the latest nightly build (avoid the stable release; it’s outdated for 2026 games).
  2. Get the Decrypted IPA: You cannot just download the game from the App Store. You need a decrypted IPA file of the latest Honkai: Star Rail version. (Search for decrypt day or check specific Discord communities).
  3. Install & Keymap: Drag the IPA into PlayCover.
  4. The Critical Step: You need a Keymapping file. Without this, you cannot use your keyboard and mouse. You can import community-made keymaps that bind WASD to the on-screen joystick and Left Click to attack.

The Risk Factor: This is technically against Hoyoverse's Terms of Service. While thousands of players (us included) do this daily without issue, there is a non-zero risk. We strongly recommend using a burner account if you choose this route.

Method 3: The Safe & Easy Way (Cloud Gaming)

If you don't want to mess with decrypted files or risk an account ban, Cloud Gaming is your best friend. This runs the actual PC version of the game on a remote server and streams it to you.

Option A: Boosteroid Boosteroid provided the best visual fidelity when Star Rail was tested.

  • Advantages: 4K live and 120FPS, support AV1 codec (when you have an M3 Mac), which consumes half the bandwidth.
  • Cons: It's a paid subscription.

Option B: GeForce Now (GFN) The reliable veteran. If you already have a GFN subscription, it works perfectly.

  • Pros: Official support (zero ban risk), very stable.
  • Cons: It has a long queue in the free version, and the bitrate may be lower than Boosteroid on certain connections.

This is, objectively, the safest way to play Honkai Star Rail on Mac in case you have decent internet (50Mbps and higher). You get PC-level graphics (better than the mobile version PlayCover uses) without generating any heat on your laptop.

Method 4: The Android Emulator (BlueStacks)

The Android Emulator

If you are on an Intel Mac or if you just want a one-click solution without the sketchy file downloading of PlayCover, BlueStacks is the standard.

It emulates the Android version of the game.

  • The Catch: It is heavy. Android emulation is not as efficient as iOS translation. To have a good time at least 16GB of RAM is required. When using an 8GB MacBook Air, you should not do this; your laptop will become a jet engine.
  • The Advantage: It already has pre-set keypads, thus you do not have to set the controls. It's plug and play.

Final Verdict: Which Should You Choose?

  • For Performance Enthusiasts (M-Series): Use PlayCover. It feels native, looks great, and utilizes your hardware properly. Just be aware of the ban risk.
  • For Safety & Graphics: Use Boosteroid or GeForce Now. You get the full PC visual suite (high-res textures, better lighting) and zero risk of losing your account.
  • For Intel Macs, BlueStacks or Cloud Gaming are your only real options.

Until Hoyoverse decides to press the Export to Mac button in Unity, these are the only ways you can play Honkai Star Rail on Mac. Pick your poison, Trailblazer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my mouse stuck when playing Star Rail on PlayCover?

This is a keymapping issue. Press Command + K to open the mapping editor, then check if your Mouse Look node is active. You may need to toggle Cursor Lock (usually the Option key) to reset it.

Can I get banned for using PlayCover on Mac?

Technically, yes. You are using a modified client (decrypted IPA). While bans are rare, they are possible. Always use a secondary account or stick to Cloud Gaming if you have valuable, limited characters.

Does the controller support work on Mac?

Yes. When using PlayCover, the game identifies it as an iPad. When you turn on a PS5 or an Xbox controller by Bluetooth, the game will automatically go into Controller Mode without requiring third-party mapping software.

Since playing on Mac via emulators like PlayCover carries a slight ban risk, many players prefer to buy cheap HSR accounts to test the waters without endangering their main progress. Alternatively, if technical hurdles have set you behind on your dailies, professional Honkai Star Rail boosting services can help you clear the latest Simulated Universe content while you wait for a native port.
