Fortnite has become more than a game. It has become a community that collabs every day. This is why staying connected in this world has become more important. Epic Games also understands the importance of Fortnite text chat. Therefore, they released a major Fortnite chat update to keep the player more connected. This will make Fortnite a platform that connects with all others.
Players should know that their chats are now available on multiple platforms. You can now text on Fortnite, the Epic Games store, and mobile apps. Your messages will stay connected and show everywhere. Moreover, in this guide, we will also cover how to text chat in Fortnite. So you can stay safe and text with full confidence. We will also go over Fortnite text chat reporting. This will allow players to keep the community safe for everyone.
Sync Your Chats Everywhere

The biggest change is the 30-day message sync. Previously, once you closed Fortnite, your text history was gone. Now, Epic keeps your DMs and group chats visible for a full month across all supported devices.
Platform Availability:
The update is yet to roll out on all platforms. However, there are still multiple platforms for Fortnite text chat.

The Four Chat Channels
The redesigned Sidebar is now your social hub. You can navigate to the "Chats" tab to see every ongoing conversation. There are four distinct ways to communicate:
1. Party Chat
This is your primary squad channel. When you join a party, you are automatically connected. Stays active as long as you remain in the party, even if you travel between different Creative islands or Battle Royale matches.
2. Game Chat
This is a public, island-specific channel. It allows you to talk to other players who are on the same instance of an island. Developers of Creative Islands choose whether to enable this and whether it includes everyone or just specific teams.
3. Direct Messages (DMs)
This feature allows players to have direct conversations. These can be your friends from the Epic Friends. To start a dm, simply click on the + button. This will be visible on the Fortnite chat window. Or players can click on the Send Message option from their friend’s profile.
4. Groups
Groups allow for massive social coordination with up to 16 members. People in groups can be different. These can even be mutual friends. So, people you do not directly know. But they might be linked through a friend.
Privacy and Safety

With more connectivity comes a greater need for safety. Epic has introduced Automated Text Reporting and real-time filters to protect players.
Real-Time Text Filters
These filters work instantly as you type to prevent toxic or dangerous situations:
- Personal Information Filter: This filter removes sensitive data. These can be email addresses or phone numbers.
- Mature Language Filter: Replaces profanity and toxic language with heart symbols.
- Always On: These filters are mandatory for all players in Game Chats and for all players under the age of 13.
Automated High-Harm Reporting

Epic Games updates chats in Fortnite on November 29. This feature allowed them to do Fortnite text chat reporting automatically.
- What it detects: This could detect self-harm or even real-world violence.
- The Consequences: Actual violations are sent to law enforcement. It could even permanently ban your account.
- Rules: This system is always on in Game Chats and in any conversation involving a player under 18. It is only off in DMs or Party Chats where every participant is confirmed to be 18+.
Reporting and Evidence
If you encounter a player violating Community Rules, you can now submit text logs as evidence, similar to Voice Reporting.
- Open the Chats tab in the sidebar.
- Select the conversation or the specific message.
- Click the three-dot menu (...) and select "Report Chat".
- Submit the report to Epic moderators for review.
Parental Controls for 2026
Parents now have a "single system" to manage social features across all Epic platforms. By logging into the Epic Account Portal, guardians can set limits that sync instantly:
- Permission Levels: You can choose between Everybody or Nobody.
- Age Tiers: Players under 10 are restricted to "Friends Only." Players under 13 are restricted to "Friends & Connections".
- PIN Protection: You need to make a six-digit PIN. This will be used to change your settings.
A More Connected Squad
The December 2025 update fundamentally changes how we interact in the "Epic Ecosystem." By syncing your chats for 30 days and allowing for 16-person groups, Epic has turned Fortnite from a game into a legitimate social network. Epic has even put on automatic safety systems. So players can have a safe place to game and connect.
