HSR Archer Build Guide - Best Light Cones, Relics, Teams, and Skills
Cheeta Himanshu
Archer is a 5-star Quantum Hunt character from the Fate/Stay Night collaboration in Honkai Star Rail version 4.4. He is one of the most generous gifts the game has ever handed out. You get a fully functional, top-tier single-target DPS without spending a single pull. His signature light cone is also obtainable for free after accumulating 200 pulls across any banners in 4.4. So even the gear is within reach without opening your wallet.
Do not let the free price tag fool you, though. Archer is genuinely one of the strongest single-target DPS units in the game right now, capable of reaching some of the highest burst multipliers in a single turn that HSR has ever seen. Let us break down best Archer build properly.

His base speed of 105 is actually intentional for his playstyle. We will explain why playing him slow is better later.
Archer Kit: How the Circuit Connection Mechanic Works
Before anything else, you need to understand Circuit Connection. Everything Archer does revolves around this state.
When he uses his Skill (Caladbolg II: Fake Spiral Sword), he enters Circuit Connection. His turn does not end. He can keep using his Skill, consuming 2 Skill Points each time, up to 5 consecutive uses. The damage bonus stacks with each use too. The first Skill hit is unmodified. The second gains a 100% DMG boost. The third, fourth, and fifth all gain 200% DMG boost. That means once you hit that third Skill, you are essentially tripling his base damage on every subsequent hit.
Circuit Connection ends when Archer has used Skill 5 times, runs out of Skill Points, or defeats all enemies in the wave. The practical target is always 3 Skill uses minimum, and 4 to 5 whenever possible. Three skills is your floor, not your ceiling.
His Ultimate, Unlimited Blade Works, deals 1000% ATK to a single enemy and grants 2 Charges. These Charges power his Talent follow-up attacks, which we will cover in the next section.
Archer Skill Priority
Level up his abilities in this order:
1
βοΈ Skill (Caladbolg II)
This is where nearly all of his damage lives. Max it first, always.
2
π Ultimate (Unlimited Blade Works)
Gives Charges for follow-ups and deals massive single-target damage. Level this second.
3
ποΈ Talent (Mind's Eye)
Powers his follow-up attacks and SP recovery. Important but secondary.
4
πΉ Basic Attack
Low priority throughout. You use it rarely once his rotation is established.
Archer Key Traces to Unlock
All three major traces are worth unlocking immediately.
Projection Magecraft (A2) raises your team's maximum Skill Point limit by 2. Your cap goes from 5 to 7 with Archer alone, and up to 9 with Sparkle. This directly expands how many Skills Archer can fire in one turn. It is one of the most impactful passive traits in the game for a DPS unit.
Hero of Justice (A4) gives Archer 1 Charge when he enters battle. Combined with his Technique which also gives 1 Charge, he starts every fight with 2 Charges already loaded, which translates to 2 free follow-up attacks and 2 Skill Points recovered before his first action.
Guardian (A6) gives Archer 120% CRIT DMG for 1 turn whenever allies gain a Skill Point and there are 4 or more Skill Points present. You want to time your big burst window around this buff. Enter his turn with 4+ Skill Points available and this buff fires automatically, massively amplifying every hit in that chain.

βββββ 5-Star
Signature. 16% CRIT Rate plus up to 80% ATK from stacking Skill uses.
Best in slot by a clear margin.
β Baptism of Pure Thought
βββββ 5-Star
Strong DEF ignore and CRIT DMG bonus. Excellent if you have it
from a previous pull.
π Cruising in the Stellar Sea
βββββ 5-Star
Best F2P option. Solid CRIT Rate and damage bonus.
Available to everyone.
βοΈ Swordplay
ββββ 4-Star
Stacks DMG bonus on consecutive hits against the same target.
Works well with Archer's skill spam.
One important note on his signature: the performance gap between it and Cruising in the Stellar Sea is narrower than most DPS signature gaps. If you already have Cruising at high superimposition, you are not losing much. The signature is worth grabbing since the 200-pull threshold is reachable during the event, but do not spend pulls specifically just to chase it. If you are running low on Oneiric Shards ahead of his banner, you can do a Honkai: Star Rail Top Up to stock up before going all in.
Best Relic Sets for Archer
Four-piece Genius of Brilliant Stars is his best-in-slot relic set. The 2-piece gives 10% Quantum DMG Bonus. The 4-piece ignores a portion of enemy DEF, and this DEF ignore increases further if the enemy has Quantum Weakness. When paired with Silver Wolf who implants Quantum Weakness, this set reaches a level of DEF ignore that is genuinely absurd. We recommend farming this set as your primary goal.
Four-piece Scholar Lost in Erudition is a solid alternative if you have not farmed Genius yet. It boosts Skill and Ultimate DMG by 20% and adds a 25% Skill DMG bonus after Ultimate use. The rotation synergy is good, but it falls behind Genius in most scenarios, especially with Silver Wolf on the team.
For the ornament slot, Rutilant Arena is the best choice. It provides 8% CRIT Rate from the 2-piece and increases Skill and Basic ATK DMG by 20% when CRIT Rate reaches 70% or above. Since most of Archer's damage comes through his Skill, this bonus is almost always active during his burst turns.

CRIT Rate (aim for 100% in combat, non-negotiable)
2
CRIT DMG (maximize after CRIT Rate is covered)
3

4
Speed (intentionally low, explained below)
The reason we want 100% CRIT Rate is simple. Archer uses Skills multiple times in a single turn. Every missed crit on a 200% DMG buffed hit is a massive loss. His Guardian trace already gives up to 120% CRIT DMG when active, so the stat budget naturally flows toward Rate over Damage on gear.
Why Slow Archer Is Better
This is the insight most new Archer players miss. Unlike most Hunt DPS units who want to be fast, Archer benefits from playing slow.
Fast Archer takes more turns but cannot chain multiple Skills on every turn because his team has not rebuilt enough Skill Points between actions. Slow Archer gives his Skill Point generators more time to act between his turns. When he finally moves, there are enough Skill Points ready to fire 4 to 5 consecutive Skills in one go. That concentrated burst window dramatically outperforms spreading damage across more individual turns.
You generally do not want Speed above 105 to 110 on Archer himself. The only exception is a specific setup with Sunday where a Speed of 135 is used to enable a minus-1 action order configuration.

A self-check before endgame: if your CRIT Rate is below 70% on gear alone, build that first before worrying about anything else. A 100% CRIT Rate with 150% CRIT DMG will outperform 60% Rate with 250% CRIT DMG in every real fight.
Common Archer Build Mistakes to Avoid
Ignoring Skill Point economy entirely. Archer eats 2 Skill Points per Skill use. Without SP-positive teammates, he will stall after his first burst and deal very little damage on subsequent turns. Your team composition matters far more for Archer than for almost any other DPS in the game.
Building Archer too fast. Speed boots are not his friend in most setups. Take ATK% boots and leave Speed management to your supports.
Activating Sparkle's Ultimate too early. If you fire Sparkle's Ultimate before Archer has used at least 2 Skills, you waste the action advance on turns where his DMG buff has not stacked yet. Use 2 Skills first, then weave in Sparkle's Ultimate for the SP injection before continuing the chain.
Chasing CRIT DMG over CRIT Rate. The Guardian trace already handles CRIT DMG on his burst turns. Getting Rate to 100% first is always the right call.

How Your Team Changes Archer Build
Running Silver Wolf: She implants Quantum Weakness on enemies, which activates the full DEF ignore effect of Genius of Brilliant Stars. Combined with the set's base DEF ignore, you can reach near 100% total DEF reduction. This is Archer's highest damage ceiling. It also makes the Quantum sphere main stat clearly better than ATK% in this setup.
Running Sparkle: She raises the SP cap to 9 with E4, enables 5-skill turns more consistently, and can inject 4 Skill Points mid-chain with her Ultimate. Your Energy Regen on Archer matters more here since you want to fire Unlimited Blade Works inside the burst window to gain 2 Charges and continue chaining.
Running Sunday instead of Sparkle: Use a Speed of 135 on Archer and set up a minus-1 action order configuration. Sunday acts just before Archer and advances him forward. This generates more Skill Points and energy compared to a standard slow setup, but it is more complex to execute.
Running Mortenax Blade: If you have access to Mortenax Blade from version 4.3, he works as a strong debuffer in Archer's flex slot. His DEF shred and increased DMG taken debuffs stack on top of the Genius set's DEF ignore, pushing Archer's single-target damage even higher in Memory of Chaos and Apocalyptic Shadow.

Gallagher
Sustain
This is his highest-ceiling team. Sparkle provides SP injection and pushes Archer's cap to 9 with E4. Silver Wolf implants Quantum Weakness and stacks DEF shred on top of the Genius set. Gallagher generates Skill Points through basic attacks and heals cleanly without consuming SP. The team functions as a cycle machine where every character's action feeds Archer's next burst window.
Team 2: Archer + Sparkle + Cipher + Gallagher

Gallagher
Sustain
This is his best option when you want more safety or face content with summons. Cipher stores accumulated damage and releases it on demand, which helps in situations where Archer cannot single-target everything. She is also fully SP positive, which takes pressure off Gallagher and Sparkle. This team feels more comfortable to pilot than the Silver Wolf version.
Team 3: Archer + Hanya or Tingyun + Trailblazer (Remembrance) + Gallagher

Gallagher
Sustain
This is the free-to-play friendly team. Hanya generates Skill Points through her talent and gives ATK. Tingyun provides energy and attack buffs, helping Archer reach his Ultimate faster for Charges. Trailblazer (Remembrance) adds True DMG amplification and their Ultimate buff caps out easily given Archer's high energy cost. Gallagher handles sustain and keeps generating Skill Points through basic attacks. None of these match Sparkle in raw output, but all are accessible and this team clears all endgame content comfortably. Players have zero-cycled Memory of Chaos with full 4-star teams around this core, which tells you how strong Archer's base kit actually is.
If you are preparing for the Starward Mode 3-team challenge, Archer slots in cleanly as your dedicated single-target DPS team anchor. His burst window clears elite enemies and bosses faster than almost anyone else in the game right now.

What Changes
E0
-
Fully viable
Complete kit, clears all endgame content
E1
The Unreached Dream
High value
Recovers 2 SP after using Skill 3 times in one turn. Massive comfort upgrade, especially without Sparkle.
E2
The Unfulfilled Happiness
Notable
Applies Quantum Weakness and reduces enemy Quantum RES by 20% on Ultimate use. Replaces some of Silver Wolf's function.
E4
The Unsung Life
Niche
Increases Ultimate DMG by 150%. Solid but not a rotation changer.
E6
The Endless Pilgrimage
Luxury
Gives 1 SP at turn start, raises DMG boost cap to 300%, adds 20% DEF ignore on Skill. Dramatically raises ceiling.
E1 is where we recommend stopping if you want to invest. It is genuinely a rotation-level upgrade, not just a damage number. It lets Archer fire 3+ Skills more comfortably even with less ideal supports, making him easier to play well in every endgame mode. E0 is perfectly functional, but E1 removes a real frustration point.
The signature light cone is free at 200 pulls during the event. E1 is the better investment compared to the light cone upgrade for most players who already have the signature.

Is Archer Worth Building?
Archer is one of the best free characters HSR has ever given out. He is T0 in Memory of Chaos and Apocalyptic Shadow with the right team, and his single-target burst capability is genuinely second to none in version 4.4. The combination of absurd multipliers, flexible team options, and a free signature light cone makes him an easy full investment for any account.
He does not work well in Pure Fiction due to his single-target focus, but that is his only real weakness. For everything else, he delivers. If you are also considering other strong DPS options from around the same period, we cover Phainon's full build separately since he fills a different role as a Physical Destruction carry. For players looking ahead to future patches, Himeko Nova and Rin Tohsaka are both worth keeping an eye on as upcoming strong additions to the roster.
