Rin Tohsaka arrives in Honkai Star Rail version 4.4 as a 5-star Quantum unit following the Path of Erudition. She is the second character from the Fate/stay night collab and plays completely unlike any standard Erudition carry. Her entire kit runs on Gem Energy, a private resource she builds by cycling Skill Points with her team. The more SP your team spends and generates, the harder she hits. Once you understand that loop, the rest of her build falls into place naturally. Here is everything you need to know about the best Rin Tohsaka build in HSR.

Rin Tohsaka Overview
How HSR Rin Tohsaka Kit Works
Her kit has two interconnected systems: Gem Energy and Skill Point manipulation. Both feed each other constantly, and that loop is what makes her strong.
She enters every fight with 20 Gem Energy from her talent, Gem Magecraft. From that point, every time any ally on your team consumes or recovers a Skill Point, she gains 1 Gem Energy. Her talent also applies a 100% CRIT DMG buff to her for 2 turns every time SP moves on your team. In practice that buff has near-permanent uptime throughout any fight.

When she reaches 15 or more Gem Energy, or when your team has 7 or more Skill Points available, her regular Skill upgrades automatically into Second Magic Experiment. That enhanced Skill is where the vast majority of her damage lives.
Basic ATK - Bajiquan: Deals Quantum DMG equal to 140% of her ATK to one target and restores 1 SP. Rarely used in practice since you want to stay in enhanced Skill mode.
Skill - Jeweled Sword Zelretch: Deals Quantum DMG equal to 225% of her ATK to one target. Costs 1 SP. Only fires when her enhanced Skill is not yet available.
Enhanced Skill - Second Magic Experiment: First hits all enemies for Quantum DMG equal to 112% of her ATK. Then consumes 3 Gem Energy repeatedly to fire additional hits at random enemies, up to a maximum of 33 times. If you have more than 2 SP when you cast it, she eats SP down to 2 and converts each point consumed into 2 additional Gem Energy before the bounces fire. This self-sustaining loop is her core damage window.
One important insight here: in an Archer team, using this Skill when your SP pool is high actually costs you damage. Those SP points would give Archer more shots, and his shots per SP convert better than her Gem Energy gain at high stack counts. Use the enhanced Skill when SP is low, not when you are sitting on a full bar.
Ultimate - An Gal Ta Ki Gal Še: Deals 600% ATK to the primary target and 200% ATK to all other enemies. Recovers 1 SP for allies and applies a 20% increased damage taken debuff to all enemies for 3 turns.

Her trace Inbound Prosperity also gives her 12 Gem Energy on use, which feeds directly back into her next enhanced Skill rotation.

Joint Follow-Up Attack - Freeform Tohsaka Style: When Archer uses his Skill, Caladbolg II: Fake Spiral Sword, and your team has 3 or fewer SP remaining, both Rin and Archer simultaneously fire a joint AoE attack. Each deals Quantum DMG equal to 300% of their own ATK to all enemies, and the team recovers 4 SP together. This resets once per Rin's turn. Without Archer, this mechanic does not activate.

Her A2 trace, Elegant Conduct, raises the team's maximum SP cap by 2 and gives her 150% ATK plus 20% DEF ignore at battle start. If Archer is in the party, he inherits the same ATK and DEF ignore bonus, which is a major amplifier for him specifically.

Her A4 trace, Ladylike Poise, gives her 20% SPD for 3 turns after using the enhanced Skill, keeping her rotation moving quickly.

Best Light Cones for Rin Tohsaka
| Tier | Light Cone | Key Stats and Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Best in Slot | Flickering Stars (Signature) | At max Superimposition: 30% CRIT Rate and 60% Skill DMG. When any ally spends 4 or more SP in one turn, she gains Radiant Crown for 3 turns. While active, all allies ignore 18% of enemy DEF and her own damage ignores an additional 32%. Her enhanced Skill naturally triggers this every time it fires. |
| Premium Alternative | Into the Unreachable Veil | 12% CRIT Rate. Using an Ultimate boosts Skill and Ultimate DMG by 60% for 3 turns. If the Ultimate costs 140 or more Energy, it also refunds 1 SP. Helps cover her 160 energy cost without the signature. |
| Budget Alternative | Eternal Calculus | Grants 8% ATK, adding 4% more for each enemy hit per attack, up to 5 stacks. Hitting 3 or more targets also grants 8% SPD for 1 turn. Strong in AoE encounters and available from Herta's Store without gacha. |
One note on Flickering Stars: the Radiant Crown DEF ignore stacks additively with the 20% DEF ignore from her A2 trace Elegant Conduct. At max Superimposition with Radiant Crown active, she personally ignores up to 52% of enemy DEF. That is one of the highest individual shred values in the game on a single character.
Best Relics for Rin Tohsaka
| Tier | Relic Set | Key Bonus |
|---|---|---|
| Best in Slot | Genius of Brilliant Stars | 2pc: 10% Quantum DMG Boost. 4pc: Ignores 10% of enemy DEF, plus an additional 10% if the enemy has Quantum weakness. As a Quantum character who benefits from Quantum weakness exploitation naturally, she gets consistent value out of both bonuses. |
| Alternative | Scholar Lost in Erudition | 2pc: 8% CRIT Rate. 4pc: 20% Skill and Ultimate DMG, plus bonus Skill DMG after using Ultimate. Fits her rotation since she fires the enhanced Skill immediately after using her Ultimate. Slightly behind Genius of Brilliant Stars on Quantum-weak enemies but closer on neutral ones. |
If you are farming relics for Rin this patch alongside other version 4.4 units, check our Mortenax Blade Material Farming Guide for a full breakdown of shared material sources so you can split your stamina efficiently without bottlenecking either build.

Best Planar Ornament
| Tier | Ornament | Key Bonus |
|---|---|---|
| Best in Slot | Tengoku@Livestream | 16% CRIT DMG base. When any ally consumes 3 or more SP in a single turn, gains an additional 32% CRIT DMG for 3 turns. Her enhanced Skill triggers this automatically every time it fires since she eats SP as part of the cast. Near-permanent uptime throughout any fight. |
| Alternative | Rutilant Arena | 8% CRIT Rate. When CRIT Rate reaches 70% or higher, Basic ATK and Skill DMG gain an additional 20%. Strong if you cannot farm Tengoku@Livestream yet, since most of her damage flows through her enhanced Skill. Hit the 70% threshold first before relying on the conditional. |
Main Stats and Stat Goals
| Slot | Main Stat |
|---|---|
| Body | CRIT Rate |
| Feet | ATK% |
| Planar Sphere | Quantum DMG Boost |
| Link Rope | ATK% |
For substats, target CRIT DMG first. Her talent gives enormous CRIT DMG bursts tied to SP movement, so every point you stack multiplies harder in her burst windows. Then aim for CRIT Rate to reach 70% or higher, followed by ATK%, and SPD last.
Stat Benchmarks to Hit:
- CRIT Rate: 70% minimum to activate Rutilant Arena's conditional. Push higher if running Tengoku@Livestream since CRIT DMG scales better with high CRIT Rate.
- CRIT DMG: No hard cap. Stack as much as possible. Her 100% CRIT DMG buff from the talent runs almost permanently, so the base you bring in multiplies heavily.
- ATK: Aim for 2,500 or above. Her A2 trace gives her 150% ATK at battle start, so your base value scales the buff significantly.
- SPD: Lower priority at E0. Relevant at E4 where SP movements grant team speed boosts.
If you are short on Stellar Jade heading into version 4.4, you can do an HSR Top Up to secure your pulls before her banner goes live.
HSR Rin Tohsaka Best Teams
Her ideal team structure is Rin Tohsaka plus Archer plus one SP support plus one sustain. Archer is not technically mandatory but the joint attack mechanic and the SP cap raise he provides are so central to her kit that treating him as fixed is the correct approach for most players. If you are also running Mortenax Blade on a second team this patch, note that both characters share some farming sources, so plan your stamina accordingly.
Best Overall: Archer Core
Rin Tohsaka
Main DPS
Archer
Sub-DPS / SP Trigger
Sparkle
SP Battery
Huohuo
Sustain
Archer is her most important teammate and the synergy is the intended peak expression of both kits. He raises the team's SP cap by 2 through his trace, burns through SP fast with his own Skill, and triggers the joint follow-up attack regularly. Every time that joint attack fires, the team recovers 4 SP, which immediately generates more Gem Energy for Rin on the next cycle. His frequent SP movement also keeps her 100% CRIT DMG buff running near-continuously. The two characters compound each other with every rotation.
Sparkle is the best third slot for most accounts. Her Ultimate instantly restores 6 SP and allows the team to bank overflow SP above the cap. She provides action advance, CRIT DMG sharing, and keeps the SP engine running between Archer's shots. SP battery plus speed plus CRIT DMG in one unit covers everything Rin needs from a support.
Huohuo solves Rin's biggest practical weakness: her 160 energy cost is the highest of any Fate collab character. Huohuo's team-wide 20% max energy regeneration means Rin reaches her Ultimate more frequently, which means more Gem Energy refunds and more enhanced Skill uses per fight. Her ATK buff also stacks with Rin's already high ATK% scaling.
Quantum Burst Team
Rin Tohsaka
Main DPS
Archer
Sub-DPS / SP Trigger
Tribbie
Quantum Support
Lingsha
Sustain
Tribbie replaces Sparkle when you want to push against heavily resistant enemies. She gives 24% All-Type RES PEN through her Skill and applies a 30% vulnerability debuff with her Ultimate. Against quantum-weak enemies paired with Genius of Brilliant Stars, the resistance shredding combines into damage numbers that pull significantly ahead of the Sparkle setup. Trade some SP stability for raw amplification.
Sustain Options
| Priority | Unit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| First Choice | Huohuo | Energy regeneration fixes her 160-cost Ultimate. Team-wide ATK buff. Best overall sustain for her rotation. |
| Second Choice | Lingsha | Strong AoE healing, SP-positive playstyle since she can basic attack while sustaining, and good synergy in the Tribbie burst setup. |
| Shielder Option | Dan Heng • Permansor Terrae | Designates Rin as Bondmate for permanent stacking shields. Recommended if she is dying in late content due to her low base DEF of 460. His summon also cleanses debuffs automatically. |
Eidolons: Where to Stop
E1, Zelretch's Apprentice is the first real power spike. When a single enhanced Skill use consumes 30 or more Gem Energy, she stores that amount as Shadow Gem. While she has Shadow Gem, she can fire another enhanced Skill that costs neither regular Gem Energy nor SP. This extends her burst window significantly and smooths out rotations where Gem Energy falls short mid-cast.

E2, Dimensional Traveler is the best value stopping point for most players. It increases her own Skill DMG by 30% and makes all allies' Skill DMG become 110% of its original value while she is on the field. That 10% increase is a separate multiplier, meaning it scales on top of everything else. Archer benefits enormously from this in a dual-carry setup.

E4, Red Devil: Triple Speed gives allies 10% SPD for 3 turns when they consume or recover SP. Useful in speed-tuned setups but not essential at E0 through E2 investment levels.

E6, Nailed It This Time! is her full transformation. She gains 20% All-Type RES PEN, earns 18 Gem Energy on Ultimate use instead of 12, and takes 1 extra turn immediately after using her Ultimate. The combination completely changes her rotation ceiling and damage output. It is a whale-tier upgrade but genuinely powerful.

For most players, E0 is the sensible baseline and E2 is the first meaningful stopping point if you plan to invest vertically. If you are pushing her in the current endgame, check our HSR Starward Mode Guide for team compositions that make the most out of her SP battery identity across the 3-team challenge format.
Should You Pull for Rin Tohsaka?
✓ Pull if:
- ✦ You already own Archer. Their joint attack mechanic and mutual buffs are the intended peak of both kits, and the synergy compounds meaningfully across a full fight.
- ✦ You are a Fate/stay night fan or want her for the character. The collab window is version 4.4, and collab units do not follow standard rerun schedules.
- ✦ You enjoy SP management playstyles and want a character whose rotation rewards active decision-making.
- ✦ You are building a dedicated Quantum team and want a unit who contributes DEF shred, vulnerability, and AoE coverage in one slot.
✕ Skip if:
- ✦ Your Quantum team is already well-covered and your resources are limited heading into version 4.4.
- ✦ You do not own Archer and have no immediate plans to get him. She still works without him but a large portion of her kit becomes inactive.
- ✦ You are saving pulls for a specific upcoming unit and Rin does not fit into any of your current team structures. If you are on the fence between her and another strong carry this patch, our HSR Phainon Build Guide covers his rerun in version 4.3 Phase 2 and helps you weigh both options against your account.
The honest verdict is that she is not a mandatory meta-defining pull at E0. She is a solid Quantum damage dealer and SP battery who adds real value, especially in an Archer team. But she is a collab unit. If she appeals to you at all, version 4.4 is the window. Missing her means waiting with no guaranteed timeline.
Conclusion
Rin Tohsaka is one of the more mechanically engaging characters Honkai Star Rail has released. Her Gem Energy loop rewards active SP management, her joint attack with Archer creates a self-reinforcing rotation that gets stronger as a fight goes on, and her trace kit contributes DEF ignore, vulnerability, and an SP cap raise all from one unit. Build Genius of Brilliant Stars for relic consistency, run Tengoku@Livestream for the CRIT DMG payoff, and pair her with Archer and Sparkle for the full kit expression. She is not mandatory, but if you pull her and build her right, she will earn a permanent slot in your Quantum lineup.
