• X and Y energy are separate resources. Energy from an X raid does nothing for Y. Mega Levels also progress independently for each form.

• Spend any Mega Energy you already banked.
• Climb Mega Levels 2 and 3 for free by Mega Evolving each time the cooldown expires.
• Walk Mewtwo as your Buddy for 100 Mega Energy per 20 kilometres, but only if the form is unlocked in your Pokédex.
• Trade spare Mewtwo before transferring them. Special Trades over 100 kilometres give guaranteed Candy XL and reroll IVs, which is the only route to a hundo you did not catch.

One caution before you trade. Players have reported that a traded Mewtwo does not carry its free Mega Level unlock across to the new owner. Niantic has not commented on this, so treat your raid catches as keepers and trade the duplicates until it is clarified.

Mega Mewtwo Raid Guide: Counters and Weaknesses

Super Mega Raids sit above standard Mega Raids and punish unprepared lobbies hard.

The shield mechanic. Partway through the fight, the boss raises shields that gut the damage it takes. In practice, both Mega Mewtwo X and Y deployed 10 shields. Early datamines circulated a figure of 12, but the live raids ran 10. Only a Charged Attack from a Mega Evolved Pokémon breaks one, and each trainer breaks exactly one. Ten shields means ten trainers, all with an active Mega. Two people show up without one and the raid stalls.

Rules for the lobby

• Every trainer needs a Mega Evolved Pokémon. No exceptions.
• Primal Kyogre and Primal Groudon cannot break shields. Leave them at home.
• Put your Mega in the last slot of your party. If it faints before the shields go up, it cannot break one.
• If your Mega does faint, back out to the lobby, heal it and rejoin. Your shield break is still available.

A Remote Raid Pass alone will not get you in. Niantic's official Link Charges page confirms that both Link Charges and a Remote Raid Pass are required to enter a Super Mega Raid remotely. Mega Mewtwo Y Counters

Mega Mewtwo Y is pure Psychic, so Bug, Dark and Ghost attacks hit hardest. It resists Fighting and Psychic.

Budget counters: Tyranitar, Hydreigon, Chandelure, Weavile, Absol, Incineroar.

The shared weakness worth exploiting. Ghost hits both forms. Build one strong Ghost team and it carries you through both raid days. That was the most efficient prep decision available over the weekend, and it will hold whenever these bosses return.

The counter tip that actually pays. In a full ten or twelve person lobby, the damage is already covered. Bring a high Mega Level Psychic-type Mega instead, like Mega Slowbro or Mega Alakazam. Megas boost Candy and Candy XL for Pokémon sharing their type, and Mewtwo is Psychic. You still break your shield, and you walk out with noticeably more Mewtwo Candy XL. Save Mega Rayquaza for the raids where you are short on bodies.

Mega Mewtwo CP, Shiny Odds, Adventure Effects and Mega Energy

The boss is a Mega, but you catch a normal Mewtwo. Here is what a perfect catch looks like.

Windy boosts Psychic types, so it was the weather everyone wanted. Shiny Mewtwo was available, and GO Fest boosted shiny odds across the board. Catches also had a chance at a GO Fest 2026 Special Background. Premier Ball effectiveness was increased during the event, so Pinap and Silver Pinap Berries beat Razz Berries.

Adventure Effects. Both forms shipped with an Adventure Effect, and the value gap between them is enormous.

Dynamic Punch+ belongs to Mega Mewtwo X. In-game text describes Mewtwo punching with concentrated power for a limited window. It increases damage against Mega Evolved Pokémon in raids, and it lets your Mega Evolved Pokémon break two shields instead of one in Super Mega Raids. Run the maths. A ten shield boss normally demands ten trainers. Six trainers using Dynamic Punch+ cover twelve shields. For rural and small communities, that is the difference between doing Super Mega Raids and skipping them entirely.

Future Sight+ belongs to Mega Mewtwo Y. Mewtwo releases psychic energy for a short window, revealing which encountered Pokémon have high stats before you catch them. Useful on Community Days and Spotlight Hours, but it saves you time, not people.

Mega Energy costs. The 7,500 Mega Energy figure for the first Mega Evolution comes straight from Niantic. The costs for the higher Mega Levels are not published anywhere official. They are visible on the Mega Evolve screen in-game, and players have confirmed the following.

That is per form. Double it for both X and Y. Translated into raids, at roughly 350 to 450 energy per win, a first Mega Evolution on an old Mewtwo costs 17 to 22 Super Mega Raids, and a full Super Max build costs 42 to 53, again per form.

The shortcut that changes the maths: a Mewtwo caught from a Super Mega Raid skips the 7,500 entry cost entirely for the form you fought. Levels 2 and 3 can then be climbed for free by Mega Evolving that Pokémon once per cooldown period. Only Super Max truly demands energy, and it wants 7,640 of it.

Mega Mewtwo in PvP and Master League

Regular Mewtwo has slipped in open Master League. Zacian, Kyurem, Palkia, Xerneas and Lunala crowd it out, and Counter has been nerfed for Trainer Battles since 2024.

The Megas are a different story, but only in Mega Master League, which surfaces roughly once or twice per season.
