OSRS Bandos Guide: General Graardor Strategy and Gear

If you are preparing for Bandos in OSRS, clear the access gates before buying an expensive setup: 70 Strength cannot be boosted for Bandos' Stronghold, you need a hammer or qualifying warhammer for the gong, and the boss room needs either 40 Bandos follower kills or an ecumenical key. For a first repeatable route, solo Ranged with a practiced kite or altar-door method is the cleanest learning lane; in a team, assign one melee tank and let the other players attack only after the tank has Graardor's attention.

The decision below is about role fit, not a permanent best-in-slot list. General Graardor can hit up to 60 with melee and 35 with his room-wide Ranged attack, while the three sergeants add separate melee, Magic, and Ranged pressure. The mechanics, access rules, and drops were checked on July 29, 2026 against the maintained General Graardor, General Graardor strategies, and God Wars Dungeon pages.

Bandos Entry Gates: Check These Before Gear

Bandos has several separate gates. Treat them as a pre-trip checklist rather than assuming a high combat level solves every problem.

Gate What the current source requires Practical consequence
God Wars Dungeon access Partial Troll Stronghold route, or the qualifying Ghommal's hilt teleport route Confirm your travel method before banking supplies; climbing boots may still matter if you lack the Trollheim teleport requirements
Bandos' Stronghold 70 Strength; this level cannot be boosted A potion does not turn a 69 Strength account into a legal Bandos entry
Door tool Hammer, Elder Maul, Dragon Warhammer, or another qualifying warhammer Put the hammer in the bank tab or inventory before travelling
Boss-room access 40 Bandos follower kills, reduced by Combat Achievement progress, or one ecumenical key Goblins are the straightforward kill-count route; an ecumenical key trades preparation time for a scarce item
Protection prayers At least 43 Prayer for the relevant protection prayers This is a hard survival floor, not a recommendation for a comfortable trip

The main dungeon also has god-affinity rules. Wear enough appropriate god equipment to avoid unnecessary aggression while collecting kill count and crossing the central room; God Wars Dungeon documents the area-by-area protection table. If the account cannot meet the Strength or Prayer gate, stop at preparation rather than treating a gear purchase as a workaround.

Choose a Solo or Team Route

The right route depends on whether the account can control Graardor's movement and whether another player can absorb the attention cost.

Route What it solves Core requirements Stop or switch when
Solo Ranged kite / altar-door Removes much of Graardor's direct damage through movement and attack timing Ranged weapon with the required attack speed for the chosen method, tile awareness, prayer discipline The player is taking repeated boss hits, losing the altar/door rhythm, or spending more supplies than the kill justifies
Solo melee Lets a player use familiar melee gear without learning a Ranged kite Strong melee accuracy, high Defence, Protect from Melee, and a plan for all three minions Trips end after only a few kills or minion damage overwhelms food and Prayer; switch to team practice or a ranged method
Team tank + DPS Shares incoming damage and makes kill time more forgiving One tank who enters first and holds attention; DPS waits for the tank's initial hit DPS attacks before the tank establishes aggro, or no one owns the Steelwill/Grimspike cleanup
Two-account or advanced methods Supports high-volume play and controlled minion stacking Multi-account execution, advanced movement, and suitable magic/tank gear The method requires more attention than the account setup can safely sustain

For most first trips, choose one route and make the failure visible. Do not mix a team tank setup with solo prayer assumptions, and do not bring an expensive kiting weapon before practicing the movement pattern in a low-cost run.

Use the board as a route reminder: gate first, choose the role, clear Graardor, then handle the minions before judging the trip.

General Graardor Mechanics That Change Your Setup

Graardor attacks every six ticks. His melee punch is the main direct threat and has a maximum hit of 60. His other attack slams the floor and sends a Ranged shockwave through the chamber; it can hit every player for 15–35, but he can use it only while within melee range of his current target. That is why a tank prioritises melee protection while keeping strong Ranged Defence, and why a solo Ranged route tries to keep distance rather than simply stacking offensive stats.

The boss is accompanied by three bodyguards:

  • Sergeant Strongstack uses melee and is normally left for last.
  • Sergeant Steelwill uses Magic and becomes the first cleanup target after Graardor dies.
  • Sergeant Grimspike uses Ranged and is the second cleanup target.

The sergeants tend to target the player who most recently damaged Graardor on their relevant timing cycle. In teams, fast attack speed can therefore make an under-defended DPS player receive more attention. The tank should enter and attack first; other players should wait for that initial control rather than opening with a large special attack.

When Graardor dies, switch to Protect from Magic, kill Steelwill, switch to Protect from Missiles, kill Grimspike, and finish Strongstack. This is the main post-kill failure point: looting immediately leaves the room full of active damage sources. Treat the room as unfinished until all three sergeants are dead or the team has deliberately chosen an emergency exit.

Gear Lanes: Buy the Role, Not the Screenshot

The General Graardor strategies page lists suggested skills around 80+ combat stats, with higher Defence and Prayer recommendations for tanks. Those are practical benchmarks, not a universal account gate. Select gear by what is causing the failed trip.

Gear lane What to prioritise Why it matters at Bandos
Solo Ranged Accuracy and damage, Ranged Defence where possible, prayer bonus, and a weapon/movement method that matches the guide's tick pattern The route wins by reducing direct boss hits; an attack upgrade that breaks movement timing can be a downgrade in practice
Solo melee Melee accuracy, Defence, Prayer, healing, and a reliable way to survive the minions Melee is simpler to start but exposes the player to Graardor and the bodyguards more often
Team tank High Ranged Defence, melee protection, Prayer buffer, healing, and a shield or defensive tool appropriate to the setup Graardor's direct attacks and the sergeants' targeting rule make survivability the tank's main damage contribution
Team DPS Damage and accuracy first, with enough Magic Defence or Prayer buffer to survive Steelwill Attack only after the tank has aggro; the best DPS screen does not fix a broken team role
Slayer-task lane Slayer helmet variant and task-appropriate combat bonuses A General Graardor task can change the value of an otherwise similar setup

Do not assume Bandos armour is automatically the correct purchase for the fight. The current Bandos armour page states that it requires 65 Defence and is valued mainly for defensive stats plus the chestplate and tassets' Strength bonus. That makes it a progression target or drop outcome, not proof that a learner should spend the whole budget on it before having food, Prayer restoration, and a legal combat route.

If a cash gap is the only blocker after the account has confirmed the quest, stat, and gear gates, the OSRS Bond vs. gold route comparison is a separate funding decision. It should not replace the mechanics or risk checks on this page.

Supplies and the End-of-Trip Check

Use high-healing food, Prayer restoration, and a teleport or altar exit that matches the chosen route. Super combat or Ranged/Magic boosting potions can improve kill consistency, but they are not a substitute for the correct protection prayer. Teams can extend trips with shared potion effects when the group has assigned the support role; solo players should value a simple inventory that leaves room for drops and emergency food.

Set a short session log before the first serious trip:

  1. Record kills, deaths, food and Prayer doses used, and any special-attack weapon charges.
  2. Separate boss loot from ordinary supplies and note whether all minions were cleared.
  3. Stop if deaths or retrieval costs dominate the session, if the tank cannot hold attention, or if the solo route repeatedly breaks its movement cycle.
  4. Continue only when the account can repeat the route without relying on a rare drop to cover the cost.

This is a personal cost model, not a promise of current GP/hour. The maintained boss page may show a price-sensitive money-making estimate, but live Grand Exchange values, kill speed, group split, supplies, and deaths can change the result.

General Graardor Drops and What They Actually Mean

The current boss page lists Big bones as a guaranteed drop and the Bandos Frozen key piece only during The Frozen Door miniquest. The important unique table is:

Drop Current listed chance How to interpret it
Bandos chestplate 1/381 One specific armour piece; do not budget around receiving it in a short trip
Bandos tassets 1/381 A separate specific armour roll; this is the usual Strength-bonus target, not a guaranteed upgrade path
Bandos boots 1/381 The third Bandos armour piece; compare its use gate and current market value before treating it as a goal
Any Bandos armour piece 1/127 Combined chance for chestplate, tassets, or boots, assuming the listed table and no other condition changes
Bandos hilt 1/508 A separate rare item used for the Bandos godsword route
Any specific Godsword shard 1/762 One shard; the three shard pieces have separate rolls
Pet general Graardor 1/5,000 A tertiary cosmetic roll, not a financial recovery plan

Bandos followers also contribute to ordinary supplies and kill count. A drop table is a probability statement, not a trip guarantee: use the unique chances to set expectations, and use the session log to decide whether the route is sustainable without a unique.

FAQ

Do I need 70 Strength to kill General Graardor?

You need 70 Strength to enter Bandos' Stronghold, and the level cannot be boosted. The boss itself has no Slayer-level requirement, but the entry gate still blocks a lower-Strength account.

Can an ecumenical key replace Bandos kill count?

Yes. An ecumenical key can skip the normal 40 Bandos follower kills for the boss-room entry. It saves preparation time but consumes an item with its own acquisition cost, so use it when the saved time matters more than the key.

What prayer should the Bandos tank use?

The player directly targeted by Graardor should use Protect from Melee and wear strong Ranged Defence with moderate Magic Defence. Team members who are not the target generally use Protect from Missiles, while the group still watches Steelwill's Magic attacks.

Is melee good for solo Bandos?

It is a usable route but usually takes more incoming damage and produces shorter trips than a practiced Ranged kite. Use it when the account has the Defence, healing, and Prayer buffer to manage Graardor plus all three bodyguards; otherwise learn the ranged or team route first.

What is the first Bandos upgrade to buy?

There is no account-independent answer. Buy the upgrade that fixes the logged failure: accuracy or attack timing for a solo route, Ranged Defence and healing for a tank, or Prayer/supply capacity when the team already kills Graardor consistently. Do not treat Bandos armour or a rare drop as a substitute for a legal entry route.
