Old School Runescape Money-Making Guide

Understand the Game’s Economy

Before you start making money in OSRS, you really need to get that the game’s economy is a ‘real’ economy that works on supply and demand from real-world players. This means it’s volatile and can change depending on when you play.

The higher the supply but no demand, it’s not going to sell for much on the Grand Exchange, OSRS’s marketplace where players can put items up for sale and purchase via the in-game portal.

Conversely, the more demand items are in-game and the lower the supply, the more expensive items will go for. The trick is to understand and keep a lookout for what players are currently vying for and trying your best to meet the demand.

This is a surefire way of understanding and playing the market, making sure you’re always profiting.

The surprising part is many of the game’s items can surprisingly sell well on the Grand Exchange as players may need to stock up a lot of the item, or players would prefer not to go through the hassle of getting it on their own.

Become a Trader in OSRS

One of the easiest ways to start making OSRS gold at low starting costs and no stats required is to start reselling. If you’re not familiar with the concept, it’s essentially about purchasing items and reselling them to others.

While it might seem improbable, it’s surprisingly effective more often than not.

In terms of Old School Runescape, this means you’re going to vendors in the game buying out an item, and then reselling it on the Grand Exchange. Typically, you could make a sizable profit of up to 10x depending on the item you’re selling.

For example, you can purchase beer for 2 gold coins. Fill up your inventory to the max with beers and put it up on the Grand Exchange. You could sell each beer for over 100 gold coins which is almost 100x its worth.

Do that for a few hours and eventually, you’ll find yourself in some major coin, especially for new players.

It’s easy to do, but it’ll take a lot of tedious work going back and forth between the vendors, bank, and Grand Exchange. It works, but make sure to check the GE beforehand to see what the current going price is for the item you want to sell.

Smelting at the OSRS Blast Furnace

If you’d prefer to take the smithing route, you should check out the Blast Furnace, a member-only area you can find in the Dwarven city of Keldagrim. The bad news is you can’t access it and use it as a F2P money making method in OSRS so you should check out one of the other methods we’ve listed.

First, make sure you have access to Keldagrim.

Once you do, head to the Blast Furnace to smelt ores in large quantities. The reason the Blast Furnace is preferred is because it uses only half the coal of a regular furnace. Just keep in mind, that you’ll need at least a level 15 smithing skill to smelt iron bars in bulk there.

At a minimum, you need to have at least level 15 smithing skills to smelt iron bars in bulk at the Blast Furnace. But if possible reach level 60+ in the smithing skill so you can access the Blast Furnace for free.

We’d suggest starting with smelting Iron Bars since you only need Iron Ore to get started. Once you get started, you can produce 5000 – 6000 Iron Bars an hour. In the optimal scenario, you can earn over 500,000 gold coins in profit.

Eventually, move up to smelting higher-tier ores like adamantine and runite bars to earn more profit with the Blast Furnace.

Hitting The Motherlode Mine

If you’re in pursuit of becoming a blacksmith in OSRS, there’s a good chance you’re hitting the mines to find some rare ores to smelt! So if that’s your main element to pursue in the game, you should head over to the Motherlode Mine in OSRS to improve your profits from both mining and smithing!

Before you can get started, the Motherlode Mine is a members-only area. You also need access to the Dwarven Mine and at least level 30 mining skills to start at the lower levels and 72 mining levels to mine in the upper levels of the Motherlode Mine.

Assuming you’re at a high level of mining skill (at least 85) is when you’ll really start to turn a profit. In the Motherlode Mine, you’ll find pay-dirts and other high-tier ores which all contribute to the total profit earned from mining.

After the pay-dirt is cleaned, you’ll get an assortment of random ores and a chance to get a golden nugget. Overall, at lower levels (Lvl 31+) you can earn around 30,000 gold coins per hour. At higher levels, you can earn over 300,000 per hour.

Plus, the extra ore and coal you find can be used for smithing at the Blast Furnace to increase profits.

Make Some Pies!

For players looking for F2P money making tips in OSRS, it’s time to make some pies! Yes, as surprising as it sounds, pies are a pretty profitable venture in OSRS. To get started, you’ll need a plentiful supply of Pasty Dough and Pie Dish.

Assuming you can create 2450 Pie Shells per hour, you stand to gain over 300,000 gold coins in profit. It’s a simple method that doesn’t require any skills, but again, it’s an extremely tedious process and is up to the Grand Exchange whether you’ll make a killing or not.

Check the latest rates to see if it’s worth using this method or not.

And those are just some of the ways you can make a tonne of money in Old School Runescape, but there are far more profitable (and tedious) ways of doing it. We’d advise you to check out the OSRS Wiki and online resources to learn even more ways!
