The popular battle royale, Apex Legends is celebrating its 5th anniversary and it’s coming right on time with the release of the 20th Season, Breakout. Apex Legends: Breakout is shaping up to be a huge overhaul to Apex Legends as we know it.
There are a ton of new changes, additions to the game, and rewards to pick up in celebration of their 5th anniversary. Today, we’re going over everything you need to know about the latest Apex Legends season to get you prepared, Legend!

Apex Legends: Breakout Release Date
Apex Legends: Breakout Season 20 is slated to release on February 13th, 2024.
The New Legend Upgrades System
The new season, Breakout, brings quite a few changes to the Battle Royale game mode in Apex, and chief among them is the new Legend Upgrades system. Players will have an ‘in-match progression system’ that has a few different abilities to choose from depending on the legend you’re playing.
In a match, as you damage other players, get eliminations, knocks, perform finishers, revives, respawns, assists, etc. you’ll earn EVO points which can be used to level up your Legend.
There are three tiers to level up, but your abilities can upgrade at Level 2 and Level 3. Each Legend will have a choice of two different abilities at the Level 2 & 3 tiers, such as improved cooldowns for your skills, improved capacities, extra ability charges, etc.
The Legend Upgrade system will be reset every match so you can try other combinations of upgrades to see which fits your playstyle best.
Revamped Armor System
In addition to the Legend Upgrade system, this is now tied into your armor levels. That’s right, players will no longer find armor on the ground as loot and can only improve their armor as the match continues by Leveling-Up with the Legend Upgrade system.
All players start with the basic White shield, and at the Level 2 upgrade it turns to a Blue shield, Level 3 changes it to a Purple shield, and Level 4 upgrades it to the final tier, a Red shield.
The Legend Armor is powered by a ‘Shield Core’ that displays your shield’s current HP limit. These Shield Cores can still be swapped out or dropped if you’re running low, but you won’t find an entirely new shield from eliminated enemies.
Fallen enemies now drop Shield Cores instead of replacing your entire shield. This heals your armor’s charge fully and if it’s a higher-tier shield (e.g. blue to purple shields), it will also grant a temporary shield charge that’ll only last 30 seconds.
How to Earn EVO
In Apex Legends: Breakout, EVO is the name of the game. Earning EVO points is an essential part of the gameplay loop to upgrade your skills and increase your armor tier.
Luckily, there are quite a few ways to earn EVO in Season 20. Some of them are from player or squad actions like below –
- Damaging enemies
- Knocks/Knock Assists
- Finishers
- EVO Cache from Care Packages, Vaults, etc.
- Squad Wipes
- EVO Harvesters
- Class Interactions (using Survey Beacons, Ring Consoles, etc.)
- Respawns
- Revives
- World Interactions (Completing Trials, Wildlife, etc.)
EVO Caches
Players will be able to find new rare loot in the form of EVO caches at the most contested sites in the game like Supply Drops or Vaults. These EVO Caches when picked up will award a full level to your Legend Upgrades and armor.
But if you’ve already reached the max Level-4, you can’t pick up the EVO cache.
EVO Harvester
Alongside EVO Caches, the EVO Harvester is a brand-new type of interactable harvester that will reward the entire squad with a large amount of EVO. EVO Harvesters will spawn at random locations in the Battle Royale game mode and will only be available during the first ring.
Ranked ‘Reloaded’
In addition to standard Battle Royale modes, Ranked matches are also receiving a ‘Reload’ with some changes to try and improve the experience. Firstly, the Level requirement for ranked will start at 20.
The ranked mode will also feature the ‘splits’ system again which coincides with the season reset. All players in Ranked start from 1 RP with the new season so everyone’s on a level playing field again.
Additionally, there will be a split reset which will segment players into 6 divisions depending on your ranking. You’ll also receive a Ranked Tier Badge depending on the highest rank you reached by the end of the season.
There have also been some changes to how scores are calculated, matchmaking will be based on RP values instead of tier-based lobbies, and a few more bonuses for winning streaks, etc.
The New Mixtape Map – Thunderdome
Making a return to Apex Legends is the new Mixtap map, Thunderdome. The Thunderdome is a menacing arena that’s floating in the sky, paying homage to the original Thunderdome arena back in the earlier seasons.
In the new Thunderdome, you can play several Mixtape modes including TDM, Control, Gun Run, and more!
The 5th Anniversary Celebration
To celebrate Apex Legends’ 5th anniversary, there’s a new 5th Anniversary Collection Event that’ll dish out rewards with the reward tracker. There’s also a new Limited Time Mode called ‘Straight Shot’ which emphasizes a quicker-paced Battle Royale mode.
