Minecraft Farming Guide

In this guide, let us find out about how to farm wheat, which will eventually help us in farming and breeding animals.

Farming Wheat in Minecraft

Here are the things you will need to farm wheat in Minecraft.

Seeds: You can find them by breaking grass on dirt; these can be found all around the map and are pretty much one of the easiest resources to find.

Water: Walk around the spawn area, and you will eventually find a water body. You must build your farm beside water for your plants to grow.

Hoe: You need two wooden planks and two sticks to craft a hoe. Use your crafting table to craft a hoe. Using your hoe, interact with the land beside the water; this will turn the dirt into farmland, allowing you to plant the seeds.

Once your crop fully grows, you can harvest the wheat, which we will be using to farm the animals.

Farming/Breeding sheep and cows

Sheep and cows can be found throughout the map; instead of killing them immediately, it is recommended to bring them back to your farm and breed them. This will give you enough supply of animal resources like wool, milk, and meat.

Build a pen (fence) for the animals before you bring them for farming. Use your crafting table to make fences and fence gates with wooden planks and sticks.

Now roam around the map to find animals. Both sheep and cows can be lured into the pen with wheat. Hold wheat in your hand and walk towards sheep or cows; they will now start following you. Lure them into the farm and close the fence gate.

If you have at least two animals of the same type, we can now go ahead and start breeding them. To breed, hold wheat in your hand and interact with both animals. Each animal will consume one wheat and give birth to a baby. It takes around 20 minutes for the baby to grow into an adult, and you can repeat this feeding process every five minutes.

Why farm in Minecraft?

If you’re wondering what the point of farming in Minecraft is, keep reading to find out a few reasons.

You can use shears and farm wool from the sheep; now trade that wool for emeralds with the villagers. Wool can also be dyed into multiple different colors when mixed with flowers and used to craft items like beds, banners, carpets, and paintings.

You can get meat from both of the animals. Sheep will drop mutton, and cows will drop beef. You can consume them to restore a little bit of your health, but cooking any of the meat will enhance its healing properties. You will need these before heading into a cave or wandering around the map.

If you have a bucket, you can acquire milk from the cows. Milk in Minecraft can be consumed by the player to remove any status effects like poison, slowness, blindness, etc.

Here are a few tips before you start farming in Minecraft

Make sure to build your starting base and farm near any water source; it will be easier to farm and breed the animals. Do not forget to place a chest near each farm; it makes the process easier.

Watch out at night during farming; there will be mobs like skeletons and spiders spawning around you. You can either defeat the mobs, stay safe inside your base, or skip the night by sleeping on your bed.

Defeating mobs like skeletons will drop bones. Collect these bones and turn them into bone meal. Use bone meal on your crops to fast forward their growth.

Make sure to craft a bucket as soon as you unlock it. You can then use the bucket to bring water and build your farm wherever you want.

Do not forget to cook your food before consuming it; you will need a furnace to cook your food. Cooked food will provide better effects than raw food in Minecraft.

Finally, if you’re having trouble containing your animals within the fence while feeding, craft a carpet with wool and place it on any edge of the fence. This way, you can jump in and out of the fence, but the animals cannot. Refer to the picture below to understand it better.
