The Top 5 Most Played Games on Steam – April 2024

Got a digital Steam gift card loaded onto your Steam account, and no clue how to spend it? Well, why not go through the list of the most-played games on Steam? Play these, and you’ll have fun with millions of other players.

2024 has seen a few shakeups to the top 5 list, while we have a couple of staples there, there are games that are either brand new, or haven’t appeared in a while. Let’s look.

Counter-Strike 2

We doubt Counter-Strike 2 (CSGO2) will ever be knocked off the top spot. It would take a lot for the 1.5 million daily players to ditch this game. Even before CS went free-to-play (a very long time ago now), it was still commanding a huge number of daily players.

What CSGO2 offers probably needs no introduction. It is a complex tactical FPS that takes hours to learn, but a lifetime to master. Learn the maps, shooting skills, and callouts if you want to win (or even kill somebody) in this classic terrorist v counter-terrorist game.

The best part is that Counter-Strike 2 is free, so you can jump in and play right now. Although, we do encourage you to get a CSGO 2 Prime account if you want to make the most of it.

DOTA 2

DOTA 2 is another F2P game that’ll be tough to knock off the top 5 most-played games on Steam. It has around 650,000 players daily on Steam, although it is not uncommon for this to hit over a million during major events.

DOTA 2 is a MOBA, very similar to League of Legends in how it plays. Part of the reason why this game is so successful is the amount of strategy it takes to win. Just like CSGO, you’ll spend thousands of hours playing DOTA 2 before you even really feel like you have begun to understand the game.

There is just one map in the game, but so many different combinations of heroes, equipment, etc. that you’ll forever be experimenting to find out exactly what works for you.

Helldivers 2

Helldivers 2 currently has 230,000 daily active players. It has fallen a little in popularity since launch, but it will keep chugging along in the top 5 most played Steam games for a while, especially if the team behind it keeps pumping out updates.

This online multiplayer game was a surprise hit for Sony when it launched on Steam. In it, you’ll team up with 3 other players (so groups of 4), to complete all sorts of missions. As you complete them, you’ll level up, grab new equipment and, hopefully, make a ton of friends.

It is very difficult to predict the future of Helldivers 2, since the developers had absolutely no clue that it would become a runaway success. However, they seem to be pumping out updates at a fairly regular pace, and this means that there’ll be tons more content to play through as time goes on.

Bear in mind that the number of players does cause server issues sometimes (a side-effect of it being tough to predict how many people would play), but these seem to be clearing up slowly.

The best part is that while this game isn’t free to play, it is one of the cheaper new releases, so worth checking out if you’ve got some extra Steam cash in your wallet.

Stardew Valley

Stardew Valley is in the top 5 most played Steam games for April 2024. It isn’t always there, though. This game has been out close to a decade now, and while it stays in the top 20, it takes a big update for that daily player count to be boosted. It now has 178,000 daily active users as the solo developer behind the game has released the biggest update in a while.

In Stardew Valley, you’ll relax and develop your own farm. Well, if you want. You can also chat to villagers, fish, farm, design, and mine. There’s also a ton of mods to add to your game if you want an even better experience. There is no rush to do anything. Just switch your brain off and play.

If you were a fan of the early Harvest Moon games (i.e. those that happened around the SNES era), then Stardew Valley is for you. It has been designed to follow all the original principles of Harvest Moon. In fact, some of the game feels almost exactly the same. If you haven’t played Harvest Moon, that’s OK. Play Stardew Valley still. It’ll be a massively fun game for you.

Dragon’s Dogma 2

With 133,000 daily active players, Dragon’s Dogma 2 is the latest entrant to this list. It is a highly anticipated single player RPG which, despite having a few problems during launch, has provided players with a huge amount of fun.

We doubt Dragon’s Dogma 2 will be in the top 5 at the end of April. Most single-player RPGs eventually fall away from the top of the list. However, if you do love your RPG games (and have a pretty beefy computer), then it will almost certainly be worth giving Dragon’s Dogma 2 a go, especially if you are able to grab it on sale.
